How to Make a Simple load for Discharging Battery packs Load used to discharge a 10 cell battery pack are 12 volt Household Type 12V bulbs one 100 watt and two 75 watt shown below. A 12 volt fan used to help keep battery pack cool, works great on 6 - 10 cells.
The best discharge load I have found so far are 12 volt Household Type 12V Bulbs used in campers and motor homes. These bulbs come in 15, 25, and 50 Watt from Camping World Inc. at $1.79 ea. not a bad price! I have also found these Bulbs at True Value Hardware stores that are 75 and 100 watt at $5.99 ea. Ouch! If you want to discharge a pack in a hurry these babies will do the job! Two 1/16 x 3/16 brass bars are soldered to120 volt type light sockets and 12 volt Household Type 12V Bulbs are installed. The nice thing about this setup is you can adjust the current by adding and removing bulbs. If you are unable to find this type bulb, auto headlights (for high loads) and dome lights (for small loads) work great. If you find this project useful please Donate
